The Instacart App allows workers to be good business people accepting shops and deliveries that appreciate their efforts. Some people can not afford to give big tips to get orders picked up quickly. However, IC joins shops and adds bonuses so Driver Shoppers can afford to deliver for more people. Driver shoppers can’t work at a loss, so orders are not picked up.Â

Full-service delivery shoppers and drivers are independent contractors and, among other things, can decide whether to take individual jobs which IC offers on its app. The jobs are now at least $5 for a delivery job and $7 to $10 for a shop and delivery job, plus other add-ons like minimum mileage, heavy order fees, and more. More than Instacart fees are needed for most shops to be worth the Driver Shopper’s efforts. The entire program is On-Demand giving Driver Shoppers the freedom to accept shops. They evaluate the shopping cost before a Driver Shopper agrees with a job. This cost consists of driving to the store; I won’t mention the added risk of shopping in a Covid-19 environment, sometimes waiting in line, shopping, waiting in line to purchase, driving to the address, and depositing groceries on the doorstep. Drivers can only justify picking up shops that cover the cost of time, gas, car maintenance, and the added stress of working during Covid-19. Â
There is a lot of information about Instacart and how unhappy driver shoppers are. I want to highlight only some that feel that way. I do not want to strike or seriously change the model. It works when it works. However, the payout system only works for clients who tip enough to make the jobs acceptable. IC will always be looking for new drivers because the payout system is unrealistic for Independent Contactors without generous tips included. So Thank you to the Instacart Clients who appreciate Driver Shopper’s efforts. We are there for you. And because many clients pay above and beyond, some people get to piggyback on your generosity, and we deliver their orders too. Driver shoppers need to make a decent living to justify the hard work. There will be shops not picked up because of this, not because there are not enough drivers but because the incentives are too low.
