Photos and Staging

Document Everything

Photographs of your furniture need to be clear and bright. Showing off details and flaws will help you make sales. You do not need a fancy camera; I have always used my Android phone. It is the simplest solution to illustrate what you are selling. I liked to take photos of everything I bought in one week in a group photo. It was a record of my inventory, and I could list items if needed from this photo. It also gave me photos of everything.

This overall shot of my work made it easy to have before and after images. The before image is more important when painting, staining, and altering the furniture. But this photo also shows how much work you put into a simple project. Clients with no skills or desire will appreciate your efforts. Use the conversion photos on your social media to show people what you’re doing. It will get you sales and furniture. Furniture is an emotional purchase; most people would like their old items to have a new life. Use your social media to show off your style. When I started my solo venture, my business plan was refinishing furniture. As I met with people and gave quotes, I realized most people would offer me their old furniture, and they would purchase a new table or dresser rather than pay to refinish. So, I changed my Business Model.

After cleaning some furniture, it is ready to sell. Take photos outside in bright sunlight with no distracting background. My favorite photo spots are in front of my bamboo or the fig tree. They create a simple set and show color and detail in the sunlight. An inside location was in front of French doors or a bay window to illustrate details in the sunshine.

Get Every Angle

To show off the assets, take photos from all angles. Front, sides, top, and back if relevant. Take pictures of unique markings, molding, handles, and flaws. Use a yardstick or tape measure to show the size. Or use something as a size reference. Take a photo with drawers or doors open and closeups of details like dovetail joints and hardware.

Stage for Use

If you have many photos and only five slots to show, there are options to make the most of them. I like to use a collage app for this. Create a scene with various pictures to illustrate the best features. A collage is an excellent way to show off on Social Media and include more attributes. Some sites will allow you to have a link inside your listing to more photographs.

Before and After

  • Photograph All Angles

  • Damages
  • Bright Light
  • Markings and Stamps

Get Social

Attach links directly to Shopify store, Instagram, Pinterest, Facebook, or FB marketplace sales listings. All of these increase your authenticity and develop a history. This history of photos will also make reference points for sales. Some people will want to avoid picking up at our home. And you can send them links to your SM to create trust. I suggest Instagram or Facebook for local sales if you don’t use Social Media now. You can also make sales directly from these sites.

Get creative and show the furniture so it stands out from other listings. The goal is to get a clear image for clients to purchase. There should be no questions about the furniture listing between your photos and the listing copy.

I have had several online shops since 2006, and they all share my desire for sustainability. I worked in the Raw Furniture Store before I decided to refurbish and sell furniture from home. I went from home sales to a booth at a flea market and an Antique shop. I loved finding and reclaiming beautiful wood furniture. While doing this, I collected many wonderful things. My collection is much like the rag-and-bone man of times gone by, filled with treasures. I salvaged many items from reclaimed pieces
